Situation Based Strategic Positioning

One of the secrets of FC Portugal is its positioning mechanism based on the distinction between strategic and active situations [1]. The SBSP mechanism is used only for strategic situations (in which the agent believes that it is not going to enter in active behavior soon). For active situations, the agent position on the field is calculated using specific ball possession, ball recovery or playoff decision mechanisms. To calculate its strategic positioning, the agent analyses which is the game situation, tactic and formation in use and its positioning (and corresponding player type). Using the tactic, formation and positioning the agent calculates its base strategic position in the field in that formation.

An example of SBSP in an attack situation (against ATT-CMU in Melbourne 2000)

This position is then adjusted according to the ball position and velocity, situation (attack, defense, scoring opportunity, etc.) and player type strategic information. The agent then issues a command that moves it towards that strategic adjusted positioning. This behavior enables the team to move similarly to a real soccer team, keeping the ball well covered while the team remains distributed along the field.
