Dynamic Positioning and Role Exchange

DPRE is based on previous work from Peter Stone et al [2,3] that suggested the use of flexible agent roles with protocols for switching among them. In FC Portugal, players may exchange their positionings and player types in the current formation if the utility of that exchange is positive for the team.

Positioning exchange utilities are calculated using the distances from the player’s present positions to their strategic positions and the importance of their positionings in the formation on that situation. Triple positioning exchanges and positioning covering are also possible but were not used in RoboCup 2000.

Contrarily to CMUnited that find out that role exchange was not useful on their team and did not use it in RoboCup 99, our experimental results showed that the DPRE mechanism increases significantly team performance keeping stamina levels higher and the number of uncovered useful positions significantly reduced. Also, the use of this mechanism enables the team to play very well using only 6 or 7 players on the field winning easily to every RoboCup 99 available team.
